This painting is a special memory for a friend who was moving away. Outside their home, every afternoon, a huge murder of crows gathered. Cawing and crying overhead, they alighted on the branches of neighborhood trees, then whirled overhead again. “Oh! Our crows are here!” this friend would say upon stepping outside.
The crows’ combined cawing was muddy mauve and deepest sepia, edged in bright tangerine. This painting is unique in that it contains sound that is nearly black…but not quite. I couldn’t resist adding the edge of black at the bottom, despite this.
Painted in 2018.
