Sculpture Garden Fountain

If you’ve been to the National Gallery of Art’s beautiful sculpture garden, you’ve seen the gently animated fountain in the middle. It’s a large circle pond with jets around the outer edge, firing toward the center. As you sit, sipping your coffee or munching a cupcake, the jets trickle in little arches, landing quite near their origin with a playful green splash. As you finish your coffee or cupcake, the arches grow, until they all land in the middle, cutting the pond into pie pieces and landing all together in the middle with a darker blue crash.

Then they retreat again…and you might sit and keep watching the arches grow and shorten, grow and shorten…not even noticing that the coffee cup is empty or the cupcake is gone. It’s an enchanting place.
